I have a backcountry permit for Saturday night at Sahale Glacier Camp. Will visibility in this area be affected by wildfires? If it is too soon to tell, what is a reliable way to gauge this closer to the end of the week? Thanks so much for your great information this summer!
ReplyDeleteNot 100% certain if visibility will be affected. The long range models show very light west winds in that area, placing you just upwind of the fires. However light winds at night also mean that smoke could drain into nearby valleys and with fires not far to the east, you might not be entirely smoke free. To gauge this closer to the day, look at the output of the Canadian FireWork model mentioned on the "AQ forecasting" tab, check the NWS point forecast at https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?x=12&y=58&site=otx&zmx=&zmy=&map_x=11&map_y=58#.W4WzYc5KjDA.
