North Columbia Basin Smoke Outlook for 8/15/18

  1. I just want to know why no one ( news , papers , online sites , you ) are saying ANYTHING about our air quality here in the Arlington, Marysville, Everett areas ? It's so bad around these areas I've been nauseous and had a really sore throat for the last 4 days . I live in Arlington and work in Marysville and in either place I can't see the mountains or hillside AT ALL !! And usually from my back yard I have no issue seeing the mountains. I've had a THICK haze of smoke hanging low on my property for over a week now

    1. There have been several news articles and posts this week talking about poor air quality in western Washington. PSCAA has also issued air quality notices. Smoke has been impacting the entire state this week so we can't do posts for every city in Washington, which is why we do statewide outlooks. This post you are commenting on is not intended for your area so you may find more useful info on another post. All that being said, we have monitored smoky conditions in Marysville only since Monday, so I don't know why you have had haze for over a week.

  2. Thanks for all your efforts on this site, and for making this info available. Here in Cle Elum we’re in the thick of things, smoke-wise, and wondering how we could go about getting air monitors for our area? Is there a particular process, or is it dependent on a larger population?

    1. I believe the Department of Ecology is planning to install a temporary monitor in your area. Watch for it to appear on the map soon.

  3. Hi, can anyone help direct me to a smoke/air forecast for the Tri Cities area? I see North Columbia but we have different conditions here. As an asthmatic, I'm trying to figure out if the air will be worse tomorrow so I can plan my quick errands accordingly. I have N95 masks but sometimes that doesn't cut it. The airnow.gov site only gives me the current aqi and the forecast seems to be for ozone not ground. Thanks!

    1. Hi Lori, the forecast for the Tri Cities wont be hugely better than the upper Columbia. Limited clearing Thursday evening into Friday, but I'm not expecting it to get much better than Moderate. Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups is a better bet. You might like to try N100 masks instead. The Airnow.gov's forecast graphics give the impression that air will be good in all the Columbia Basin tomorrow, but that's because they're not producing a forecast for those areas (i.e. no data). You can use some of the forecast resources on this blog to get an idea of how things will likely be.

  4. Is there an outlook for western Washington up near Canada? I'm curious to know when and if we're going to clear up at all

    1. Amanda, you can expect some short-lived clearing between tomorrow morning and Saturday evening.
