  1. My family recently moved to WA state and am trying to keep up with smoke reports. I'm also trying to gauge what an average year will be like for us in our new relocation. From all the reading I've done thus far, it seems longer fires seasons are "predicted to be the norm". I'm not yet able to find a clear cut answer though as to when the smoke/fire seasons start and stop. It looks like possibly between Jul-Oct? Are there any other times during the year (on average), other than Jul-Oct, that Puget Lowlands area needs to be on alert for smoke? My continued thanks for keeping us informed.

    1. Hi, wildfire smoke season typically runs from June- September, though some forays into October are not unheard of (2012 for instance). Here's a blog post I made a few days ago rolling up some historical air quality data: http://wasmoke.blogspot.com/2018/08/while-waiting-for-bc-smoke-scene-2-lets.html
The other season where air quality can be an issue in WA is Nov- Feb, when wood burning for home heating + certain meteorological conditions causes smoke to accumulate in some communities. More frequent in eastern WA but Tacoma, Kent, Marysville, Darrington etc are often affected. Though not assailed by the concentrations of smoke we're seeing now. Hope I'm not scaring you!

  2. I see there aren't any air monitoring stations in the San Juan Islands, any sense of how they fair in these smoky times? (great blog and thanks btw)

    1. Check the monitors in Anacortes and Victoria BC on the above map. San Juans wont be very different.
